CHEHALIS, Wash. — Coach William Garrow and the No. 1 (Class 2A) Tumwater High School Thunderbirds have known nothing but ending their season at Husky Stadium in recent years.

This time, they want to carry out the big Gridiron Classic trophy, not watch somebody else do it.

After back-to-back WIAA championship-game losses to Anacortes, then Archbishop Murphy last season, there is an obvious determination by this Tumwater group to finish off the 2026 season the right way.

It certainly showed up in the regular season — capped by the T-Birds’ 51-21 dismantling of sixth-ranked (2A) W.F. West on Friday night.

And after having two phases — offense, defense or special teams — score in seven of the team’s first eight games, the T-Birds completed the trifecta Friday night with end-zone visits by all three units.

It is undeniable and indisputable — the No. 1 Puyallup Vikings are the team to beat in the upcoming WIAA Class 4A football playoffs.

They proved it with suspense-filled 31-24 overtime victory over No. 3 Graham-Kapowsin on Friday night at Sparks Stadium.

It won’t be official until Sunday morning, but mark it down in ink — the Vikings will be the top overall seed in the playoffs.

The Lakeside of Nine Mile Falls Eagles are in the final four — with a $1 million prize on the line.

And the likes of current NBA guard Corey Kispert, former NFL Super Bowl MVP Mark Rypien, recent World Series pitcher Drew Rasmussen, former NBA Seattle Sonics guard Luke Ridnour and even food-connoisseur television personality Guy Fieri are all involved to try and help the school bring it home.

It’s all part of T-Mobile’s “Friday Night Lights” 5G competition where high schools in communities of 150,000 residents or fewer have been trying to compile a mass amount of online votes — with the winner moving on to the next round.

“It is full gas pedal down,” said Devin Bauer, the district athletic director and former football coach at Lakeside of Nine Mile Falls.

At nearly every level, Mark Keel has been an important figure in football for decades in the state of Washington.

He was first noticed in his one season as a player at Clover Park High School in Lakewood — but really became a big-time recruit after attending Olympic College in Bremerton as a three-sport dynamo.

It was there that the University of Arizona saw the 6-foot-4, 230-pounder play football, and signed him out of junior college. Keel ended up setting receiving records for a tight end with the Wildcats.

As part of his brief NFL-playing career, Keel was a member of the Seattle Seahawks’ strike-shortened season in 1987.

When Carl Haberberger took the reins of the football program at his alma mater — Cascade of Leavenworth — in 2023, he had his son, Dash, in mind.

At the time, Dash was in middle school, bubbling over wanting to play for the Kodiaks someday.

Haberberger wanted to make sure the program was rebooted and ready.

And after years of rebuilding — with its share of dispiriting moments — the Kodiaks are now in playoff-ready shape in the Class 1A ranks.

Brayden Medelez, Hermiston (Ore.): In MCC matchup of high-powered quarterbacks, the junior rushed for a career-high 257 yards and three touchdowns, and passed for 158 yards and two more scores in the team’s 49-47 win over Sageview.

All that longtime offensive mastermind Pat Jones has known over the past three decades is legacy football.

Jones was part of the Bellevue championship dynasty under former coach Butch Goncharoff. And he’s continued the run of success Sheldon Cross started leading the Kennedy Catholic program.

That’s not to say Jones doesn’t appreciate what it takes to win a league championship year after year.

PROSSER, Wash. – You just knew it was going to come down to the final play.

For 47 minutes on Friday night, the visiting eighth-ranked Selah Vikings and the No. 5 Prosser Mustangs were in a bruising battle at Art Fiker Stadium.

A slugfest, if you will.

With Selah trailing 14-10 and holding the football with 3 minutes and 50 seconds remaining at its own 48 yard line, the Vikings went with their star running back, handing senior Calen Wuitschik the ball.

But Wuitschick — who hadn’t really broken loose on this night, but he wasn’t completely contained — got just 4 yards on three plays.

It took a 30-yard pass to Jarrid Scribner to Clayton Bucknell to get Selah into the Red Zone.

On a fourth and 6 from the Prosser 8, it all came down to one final play.

Scribner set up to pass to find a receiver in the end zone. But the ball was deflected by Prosser defender Ben Colgan into the hands of Mustangs teammate Brody Buxton for an interception, a touchback, and a 14-10 victory.

“The play before that, right before they snapped it, I saw (Scribner) looking our way,” said Buxton. “I let Ben know. He deflected it. So really, it was Ben (who made the play).”

Prosser coach Corey Ingvalson looked drained after the game.

Even moreso, he was emotional when he tried to talk to his players at midfield. And he brought up the godfather of Prosser’s program (and Ingvalson’s coach when he was a player).

“This program means a lot to me. Coach (Tom) Moore means lot to me. It’s special to uphold the program and try to live up to that legacy,” said Ingvalson. “These guys work hard to find their identity and culture. And Selah is heck of a team. They got warriors at running back, and they’ve got warriors on the line.”

Ryan Harrington has always been a we-before-me quarterback as the leader of Anacortes High School football.

But on Friday, as passing touchdowns began piling up, he vehemently wanted to go for a WIAA single-game record.

“I don’t like to play selfish,” Harrington said, “but this is the one time I wanted to be selfish.”

In typical team-first fashion, Blaine High School junior quarterback Connor Brown wanted to filter out all the noise.

As the game progressed, especially in the second half, teammates started to approach him about big numbers and single-game passing records.

Again, Brown tried to wave it off.
