Ron Lepper is a big man with a booming voice. But even his loud hollering from the Mount Baker sideline couldn’t cut through all the on-field chaos.

In the final seconds, Lynden Christian lined up for a game-winning field goal. Lepper shot glances from his players on the field to the play clock, which had elapsed.

Still, the Lyncs snapped the ball — and kicker Jackson Yun kicked a 38-yarder through the uprights for the go-ahead score.

As Lynden Christian celebrated, this time Lepper ran on the field toward the officiating crew to tell them an obvious delay-of-game penalty was missed.

“I might have gone out too far on the field,” Lepper acknowledged.

But it worked. The officials huddled up, and retroactively, they agreed with Lepper — and issued the penalty that negated the Lyncs’ field goal.

Two plays later, third-ranked Lynden Christian had another kick from roughly the same spot. This time, Yun missed wide left — and No. 7 Mount Baker won the game, 34-33, in Deming, Wash.
