White River’s Wyatt Evenson has a healthy amount of respect for his Pierce County-King County border coaching rival at Enumclaw — Mark Gunderson.

Gunderson took a struggling one-win program and built it into a powerhouse.

Evenson hopes he is on that same track — and took a momentous step Friday night.

Ray Palmer scored twice, including the decisive go-ahead touchdown with six minutes remaining, and White River stunned fifth-ranked Enumclaw, 21-14, at legendary Pete’s Pool.

With the win, White River won the 3A NPSL championship, and posted its first undefeated regular season since 2004.
