Longtime coach Jon Eagle has won a pair of 6A championships in Oregon, including in 2024 when the Lions defeated eventual Washington 4A champion Sumner in a nonleague thriller. (Leon Neuschwander / For SBLive OR)

Jon Eagle gets up at whatever hour he so chooses, can sit in his chair, drink coffee and watch any show or read up on any topic for as long as he wants.

His day gets much busier in the afternoon: Coaching football at Oregon powerhouse West Linn High School, the reigning Class 6A champion.

It won’t be that way much longer. Just like from teaching in 2019, Eagle is retiring from his head-coaching position at the end of the season, capping an illustrious 33-year career leading a high school program (Evergreen of Vancouver, Redmond, Camas, West Linn).
