UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. — A first-time observer, who happened to be a former NCAA Division I football player, approached Lake Stevens High School volleyball coach Kyle Hoglund after the match.
Lake Stevens had just swept reigning Class 4A champion Curtis in three sets in a titanic early-season matchup.
“Where is she from?” the observer asked, inquiring about the springy 6-foot girl wearing the No. 22 jersey from Lake Stevens.
“Where is she from?” Hoglund repeated in a befuddled tone. “She’s from a different planet, man!”
Indeed, senior Laura Eichert is a different volleyball species altogether.
