Lynden survives final-minute frenzy to turn away Franklin Pierce
Both programs live up to their preseason billing as No. 3 Lions stop No. 5 Cardinals' game-tying two-point conversion run, last offensive series after hosts recover onside kick
TACOMA, Wash. — For the third-ranked Lynden Lions, it was about maintaining the high level of excellence they are used to, continuing to show they are a viable Class 2A contender.
For the No. 5 Franklin Pierce Cardinals, it was about showing there can be room in the pantheon of state’s elite for a program from the often-dismissed 2A SPSL.
Both ideas became realistic after Saturday.
Lynden stopped a go-ahead two-point conversion attempt in the final minute, then after allowing the Cardinals to recover the onside kick, stuffed them on three plays, including the game-sealing interception as the Lions survived at Franklin Pierce Stadium, 21-20.
