The sixth full week of the high school basketball season in Washington featured big individual playmaking and defensive performances around the state.
Here are 10 standouts up for VarsityWA’s Basketball Athlete of the Week voting for winter-holiday games played the week of Jan. 5-10:
Brooke Blachly, Archbishop Murphy girls basketball: Sharp-shooter headed to Santa Clara scored a game-high 32 points, including four 3-pointers, in a Wesco victory over Shorecrest.
Ashlan Bryant, Deer Park girls basketball: Scored 28 points with six assists in a win over East Valley of Spokane, and had 22 points, six rebounds and five assists in a win over Pullman in 2A GSL action.
Ryan Carney, Gonzaga Prep boys basketball: Point guard found his perimeter-shooing groove by canning seven 3-pointers, scoring a season-high 27 points in the defending Class 4A champions’ victory over University.
Ben Deochand, Seton Catholic boys basketball: Totaled a school-record 40 points in a 1A Trico win over Castle Rock, and had his seventh game of 20 or more points by scoring 24 in a loss to Kalama.
Mason Emil, Mount Rainier boys basketball: Junior erupted for a career-high 36 points on 12-of-22 shooting, adding 15 rebounds in a 4A NPSL victory over Kennedy Catholic. He has posted double-doubles in his past three games.
Aylen Garnett, Touchet boys basketball: Eighth grader had a pair of 50-point triple-doubles — a career-high 56 points, 12 rebounds and 11 steals against Waitsburg, and 52 points, 14 rebounds and 10 steals against Riverside Christian.
Davien Parks, Tulalip Heritage boys basketball: Senior came up big against two playoff powerhouses on the road, scoring 20 points in a win over 2B Lake Roosevelt, and 24 points in a win over DeSales in a rematch of last year’s state 1B playoff game.
Maggee Schmitz, White River girls basketball: Poured in a career-high 38 points on 15-of-28 shooting, including four 3-pointers, and had three steals and a pair of blocked shots in a 3A NPSL rivalry win over Enumclaw.
Rakin Showki, Sammamish boys basketball: Prolific scoring guard keeps resetting his school’s single-game record. This time, Showki tallied a career-high 61 points with seven rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots in a KingCo win over Lindbergh.
Tenice Waters, Reardan girls basketball: Tallied a game-high 23 points in upending defending 2B champion and top-ranked Northwest Christian of Colbert on its own home court.
