The fourth and fifth full weeks of the high school basketball season in Washington featured big individual playmaking and defensive performances around the state.
Here are 10 standouts up for VarsityWA’s Basketball Athlete of the Week voting for winter-holiday games played the weeks of Dec. 22-Jan. 3:
Armando Chavez, Mabton boys basketball: Set the new single-game Yakima valley scoring mark by pouring in a career-high 60 points in a 2B EWAC win over White Swan, drilling seven 3-pointers to eclipse ex-Kittitas standout Brock Ravet (55 points).
Brooklynn Haywood, Union girls basketball: The Oregon signee is in hot pursuit of ex-Cashmere star Hailey Van Lith’s career WIAA scoring record. She has 36 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in the Titans’ top-10 showdown win over Tahoma.
Cheyenne Hull, Davis girls basketball: Reigning state MVP was unstoppable in a nonleague showdown against 3A No. 1 Bellevue, scoring a game-high 31 points and pulling down 16 rebounds for 4A No. 1 Pirates in 79-68 road victory.
Adrik Jenkin, Colfax boys basketball: Senior guard drilled a season-high nine 3-pointers on his way to 37 points, and the 2B No. 1 Bulldogs handled top-10 2A Pullman in a nonleague game.
Shaylen Kast, Moses Lake Christian girls basketball: Ninth grader scored a season-high 30 points on 10-for-18 shooting while pulling down 13 rebounds in a nonleague victory over DeSales.
Frankie Medina, Grandview boys basketball: Senior guard had a game-high 23 points and dished out a school-record 19 assists in team’s 2A CWAC victory over Toppenish. Also became program’s career assists leader in that game.
Giovanni Rodas, Oakville boys basketball: Smashed the school’s single-game scoring mark with 57 points, including four 3-pointers, in a 1B Columbia Valley win over Cornerstone Christian Academy. Had career-best 29 points by halftime.
Rakin Showki, Sammamish boys basketball: Posted back-to-back 50-point games at a holiday tournament in Canada — 55 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Centennial, and 54 points, including eight 3-pointers, and 10 rebounds in a win over Mennonite.
Michael Smathers Jr., Marysville Pilchuck boys basketball: A couple of weeks after setting a career high in scoring with 36 points against Marysville Getchell, he reset that mark by going off for 47 points in a Wesco overtime loss to Lynnwood.
McKenna Torrey, Adna girls basketball: Tallied a game-high 24 points, including 20 in the second half as the Pirates upended three-time defending 1B champion Neah Bay in a nonleague showdown. Torrey canned a pair of 3-pointers in key late 10-0 run.
