WIAA 1A state championship game: Royal foils late 2-point conversion, wins sixth consecutive title
Cashmere drives 92 yards for touchdown, and opts for win with 18 seconds remaining. But conversion pass is too wide of Logan Spies, and Knights win 21-20
SEATTLE — Cashmere had one shot Friday to end the greatest run of WIAA championship football ever seen at Gridiron Classic.
The Bulldogs had just marched 92 yards for a touchdown. And with 18 seconds remaining, they decided to go for the win.
And came within inches of getting it.
Wide receiver Isaac Zavala had a streaking Logan Spies open for the win. But Royal got just enough backfield pressure to force a throw that finished wide of the mark, and the five-time defending state champion Knights escaped with a 21-20 victory at Husky Stadium.
With the win, Royal has now won six consecutive Class 1A titles, extending its WIAA record streak.
