Original post, Dec. 8: The 14th and final week of the high school football season in Washington featured big individual performances on offense, defense and special teams.
Here are 10 standouts up for VarsityWA’s Football Athlete of the Week voting after last weekend’s state championship games:
Caleb Bingham, DeSales: Changed the whole tenor of the 1B title game with his second-quarter 100-yard interception return for a touchdown. Also rushed for 56 yards and another score in the Irish’s 26-14 win over Liberty Christian.
Owen Brustkern, O’Dea: 3A Metro co-defensive MVP had two tackles for loss and a sack at linebacker, and caught the game-winning 30-yard touchdown from Hutton Leverett in the Irish’s 21-14 state-championship win over Mount Tahoma.
Felix Diaz, Mount Tahoma: Senior had an interception and five tackles on defense, and rushed for 73 yards, including the go-ahead 51-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter in the team’s 21-14 loss to O’Dea in the 3A title game.
Karter Gadish, Tri-Cities Prep: His ninth interception of the season proved to be a championship-maker. His 35-yard pick-six with 2:38 remaining put the Jaguars up by two scores in their 47-35 win over Toledo to win the 2B title. Also had a tackle for loss.
Rylan Hatmaker, Cashmere: Threw for a game-high 205 yards and a touchdown, rushed for 73 yards, including a 3-yard touchdown with 18 seconds remaining — and also had a 57-yard punt in the Bulldogs’ 21-20 loss to Royal in the 1A title game.
Dax Jenks, Royal: Rushed for a game-high 143 yards and a touchdown, and also caught two passes for 101 yards, including a 71-yard score in the first half in the Knights’ 21-20 win over Cashmere to win the 1A title.
Lance McGee, Sumner: Shattered the 4A championship-game rushing records for carries (46) and yards (368), and tied the all-classification Gridiron Classic mark for rushing touchdowns (six) in the Spartans’ 41-35 overtime win over Lake Stevens.
Blake Moser, Lake Stevens: Did all he could to keep the Vikings in it, passing for 224 yards and a touchdown, and rushing for 149 yards and four scores in Lake Stevens’ 41-34 loss to Sumner in the 4A championship game.
Jake Sherfey, Tri-Cities Prep: Rushed for 123 yards and a game-high three touchdowns, and also had a team-high eight tackles and a forced fumble in the Jaguars’ 47-34 win over Toledo for the 2B title.
William Wilson, Archbishop Murphy: Returned a fumble 39 yards for a defensive touchdown, and led the Wildcats with a game-high 11 tackles, including three tackles for loss and two sacks in their 35-20 win over Tumwater for the 2A title.
